Desk Risers vs. a Standing Desk

If your desk is a little too low, you probably don't need a whole new desk. Here's how to decide between simple risers and a standing setup.

When risers make sense

When a standing desk makes sense

Measure your ideal height

Sit in your chair with feet flat and shoulders relaxed. Bend your elbows to about 90 degrees. Measure from the floor to your forearm. That's roughly where the desktop should be. Subtract your current desk height to get the lift.

Fit and stability

Desks get bumped and leaned on, so a snug pocket matters. Measure the bottom of each leg and leave about 1/4 inch of clearance. Raise every leg by the same amount and check for wobble by pushing on the top.

Don't forget thigh clearance

Raising the desk should give your legs more room, not less. If you also raise your chair, recheck that your thighs clear the desk.

Common questions

How much should I raise my desk?

Most people need 1 to 3 inches. Measure your elbow height while seated to be sure.

Will risers work on a desk with a crossbar?

Yes, the riser goes under each leg; crossbars don't affect it.

Can I get help with sizing?

Yes. Use the chat on any page or text 860-856-3633 with a photo of the leg next to a tape measure, and we'll help you pick the right size before you order.
